The Greater Milwaukee Green Party endorses Wendell Harris for Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Director, District 2.
Wendell Harris’s life and work have embodied Green Party principles – among them social and economic justice, non-violence, diversity, and grassroots democracy.
Over the years, he has fought for social justice, devoting countless hours to the NAACP at the local and state levels.
He played a leadership role in the successful Coalition to Stop the Mayoral Takeover of MPS in 2009-2010, preventing the Governor and state legislators from taking away control of MPS from the citizens of Milwaukee. Wendell opposes current efforts to destroy MPS by turning it into a free-for-all of charter schools in the image of New Orleans. Wendell continues to oppose privatizing MPS food services.
His ongoing participation at Transition High School for students who have been incarcerated, expelled, or chronically truant, speaks to his respect for diversity among our school population. To promote non-violence, he founded and has led the Peace Ambassadors conflict resolution program for MPS high school boys and girls.
Wendell’s early personal history was a rough road. Claiming the late Mayor Frank Zeidler as one of his mentors, Wendell has developed knowledge and wisdom relevant to directing the course of an often-troubled urban school district.
A vote for Wendell Harris will strengthen Milwaukeeans against surrendering public education to profit-oriented private interests and will ensure a dependable vote on the School Board to make MPS a much better place for all of our children.
